LIFE IN TREES

Life In Trees is a creative activity, designed to exist as part of school curriculum in early environmental education. The activity involves the use of a simple cardboard construction, with attached reflective surface, in correspondence with a camera or camera-equipped device.

This device is used, in the hands of children, to produce ever-unique imagery, in exploration of nature. The reflective element of the device gives the child an ability to create a symmetrical ‘face’, as they interact with the textured surfaces of trees.

Following photographic record of their individually sourced ‘face’, children are encouraged to produce a piece of creative writing, detailing the character, life and history of the tree.

This lesson activity is currently in its second year of trial
at Wallace Primary School, outside of Glasgow.

APPARATUS FOR GEOMETRIC COMPOSITION

The Apparatus For Geometric Composition was developed for and in collaboration with artist Rachel Barron.

It has been designed in correspondence with the artist's working process, from the themes of her research - including geometry, astronomy, coded language and graphical musical notation - through to the structural elements of her tangible output.

The construction begins with a flat bed, marked to accommodate various paper dimensions. The bed of the Apparatus is accessorised by a number of attachments to facilitate precise plotted marks on the paper.

The Apparatus became part of the artist's space in a recent collective exhibition, Drawn Away Together, at Edinburgh's Talbot Rice Gallery. Work produced on the Apparatus provided imagery for the exhibition banner, poster and postcards.

THE CORPORATE PRESS

The Corporate Press is an independent publishing endeavor, born off the back of a campaign to offer Comb Binding services for hire.

The distinct aesthetic of the stereotypical plastic comb-bound document appropriates the name. However, 'corporate' is chosen more so for its connotations of something shared by those of a common collective.

The Corporate Press hopes to provide a publishing opportunity for individuals to output conceptual and critical theory, photographic essay, image or narrative in plural quantity.

SHOW YOURSELF

Show Yourself is a public exhibition and shared experience that allows tenants living across the street from one another to connect voluntarily and take collective ownership of the space that exists between them.

The proposal invites tenants to offer something telling of themselves, for display in their window, to create an instance of mutual exchange from common intrigue.

This communicative gesture aims to initiate resident interaction and found a basis for continued community activity, self-sustainable among the neighbours.

REAL TO REAL

An investigation of contemporary ways to capture and communicate physical processes over the internet, revealed flawed technique and restrictive means. In response, the Real To Real system was developed to specifically facilitate teaching an instrument across the video-sharing platform, Youtube. The method further mediates both creation and consumption of content by tutor and student.

Real To Real presents a unique way for a tutor to contribute structure to their online teaching and best translate the physical technique involved in playing an instrument.

In the position of student, a user receives an individual learning experience that can be personally controlled. The method provides immediate feedback on physical attempts and affords the student an awareness of any erroneous technique.

PROJECT THEORY

Project Theory is a technique that traces the path of a working process in any individual Design endeavor.

Articulated theory uncovered and realised over the course of a project is documented and collated chronologically.

This technique stipulates that each recorded comment must stand alone to make sense even outwith the context of its surrounding investigation.

As a whole, these results map a maturing cognitive progression, telling of a Designer's tendencies to draw and process insight.

FUTURE FORECASTING

Weather-based conversation is a renowned national trait and distinct social phenomenon that can unite strangers in spontaneous interaction. Such interaction relies upon the daily variety and unpredictability of current Scottish weather. Future Forecasting considers officially forecasted change in the country’s climate, to form a speculative future context for design within.

What might alter in our relationship with the weather, the city and one another, if we lose the nature of current conditions and are forced to endure a relentless rainy season?

Proposed, in response to this question, is a new means to interpret, convey and forecast the weather; with attempt to capture and exploit newfound variety or unpredictability, that may be quantified and conveyed to the public.

COMMUNITY STATUS

Community Status explores the value in cultivating a sense of community across the diverse demographic found to exist in today’s tenement structured housing. Developed in response, is a lo-fi physical intervention that supports an interactive activity. It is intended to be an accessible and engaging endeavor for all those housed within the tenement.

Through a system of verbal prompt cards, distributed to each door, residents can share information upon a communal close pinboard, and ultimately raise awareness of one another. Continued involvement, for the duration of the activity, allows each resident the chance to build an informal personal profile and create a public presence for themselves, under their own conscious control.

Beyond the finite close activity, there is opportunity to record and collate the results in a lasting tangible format, to be retained by each resident as a personal resource.

EVERYDAY INSPIRATION

My everyday inspiration is continually collected through the medium of photography.

Continuity can be identified in ambiguity, emptiness and the presence of an arcane narrative. The framing of subject matter is driven by an essential intrigue into often juxtapositional elements of society.

This ever-growing collection supports my own Design-related thinking and fuels personal critical theory.

A dedicated space for this output is in being created at :
